Whenever a sock comes out of the dryer all by itself, I grab the appropriate shoebox, check for its mate, and if none is found, add the lonely sock to the box for next time. I like this solution so well, I plan to take the next step, which for me will be to cover the shoeboxes with pretty paper to help them match the decor. :) For lonely socks, I keep a shoebox in the laundry room for each family member. Each family member has a laundry basket of their own, into which clean laundry is placed for them to put away. Unmatched socks stay in the basket until the partner turns up. I have a teenaged daughter who has worn mismatched socks, by choice, since she was about 8. So any permanently mismatched socks go to her! Two ways.
