While walking through Target the other day shopping for my daughter’s birthday I came across the Chatter Telephone Pull-Along and the Two Tune TV from Fisher Price.

Wow, did those ever bring back memories! It makes me think about the things we’ve let go and forgotten about. I can let things go very easily, they are after all just things. However, as a parent I do understand the attachment we can have to our children’s toys. It is an era passed. Saying goodbye to the stages. Baby, toddler, school age… it can be hard.
Our toys are well loved. I embrace saying goodbye to the old and making way for the new. However, here are a few classics you might want to hold on to for future generations or for when family is visiting:
1. Barbie – Although she is 50 years old she is always in style. My grandmother kept a few of my barbies that I played with and I can’t wait to pass them down to my daughter and see the expression on her face when she sees their clothes. They were definitely a sign of the times. I say keep the best of the best and let the rest go to a special little girl that can use them now.
2. Legos – Whether you have instructions or not, a kid can build whatever his imagination so desires with Legos. My mother-in-law kept my husband’s Legos and they are now mixed in with my son’s. I will save this new mixed collection to pass down to the 3rd generation.
3. Match Box Cars – From little coupes to concept cars match box cars are here to stay. We have my husband’s cars as well. My mother-in law painted a little blue dot on the bottom of his cars so he didn’t get them mixed up with his friends. Now my son goes through them and can pick out which cars were Daddy’s cars.
And now, I think I might just save one more thing. My daughter’s MP3 player that plays nursery rhymes. My generation played with a two tune TV, I also remember a toy record player and my how times have changed. I wonder what her kids will think of her musical MP3 player when they are grown.
Do you still have a toy that is a “blast from the past”? Is there a toy that your kids currently own that you know you want to save for future generations?

I often think of things I used to own and wish I held onto. I often look at ebay to check out wold stuff to see if anything rings a bell…
The toy set that I will never get rid of from my boys is their Geotrax Train Sets. It takes 2 huge rubbermaid containers to store but they are so sturdy and so fun!!
I have just recently brought out some of my Strawberry Shortcake dolls from my childhood for my daughter. Also some Barbies and clothes that were played with by me but originally belonged to a few of my aunts! The clothes and even the dolls themselves look different than now.
I have saved my sons Thomas Trains and Matchbox cars and will save his Legos when he outgrows those. Though watching both he and my husband play with Legos, I’m not sure one ever outgrows those! I will also save the things built by my father in law such as a wooden barn and a beautiful wooden doll bed.
