It Was Just One of THOSE Days

Yesterday I had one of THOSE days. It happens every once in a while. I’m sure you know what I mean. It’s hard to juggle it all and sometimes life just happens.

I woke up, made breakfast and lunches for everyone, threw in a load of laundry dropped my 8 year old off at school at 7am, came home checked emails, got myself and my other two kids ready and then took them to school at 9am.

That’s when it happened. I saw all the cute little kiddos in their costumes walking in the school. I looked back at my kids in the rear view mirror. Just as I suspected, no costumes. I looked back at the school then at the clock. I had a meeting to be at by 9:30 It would take me 20 minutes to get there.

I looked back at my son again and I said, “Oh no, today you were supposed to wear costumes!” And then I waited. I wasn’t sure what to do next. Then he looked at me with that look that could have easily tuned into tears and said “You know mom, kids can be late.” I said “Yep, your right. We’re going home.”

I called and left a message with the woman I was meeting and told her that I  would be there late and we headed home.

We got home, got the costumes on, rushed back to school and first thing my son’s teacher asked me was if I had pizza money. What?!? Pizza too? I ran back to the car and gathered up a couple of dollars  and gave it to his teacher.

I got to my meeting at 10:15 just as the woman I was meeting got there and luckily for me she was having one of THOSE days too. She hadn’t even listened to my message yet. We had our meeting and all went well and I went about the rest of my day which consisted of more emails, a couple of phone calls, pick up kids, a blog post, and the rest of our evening routine. Then I climbed into bed and let out a big sigh! Whew!

——————————-

The information I needed was right there. The note from the school about the costumes and the pizza were right on my counter but I ignored it. I even took the papers out of my kids folders but I didn’t read it thoroughly. Halloween was next week, I assumed it was talking about next week. We just got back in school after fall break and I thought there was no way they would plan anything for this week. But I was wrong.

I have a system and I failed. My mommy report card for the day had a D. If I would have made the kids go to school without their costumes that would have deserved a big fat F. My system didn’t fail me. I failed the system. I didn’t stick with my routine. My routine works quite nicely but I have to do it consistently. Consistency and maintenance, that is how you get an organizing system to work. My week was busy and hurried and I let things get the better of me. That little oversight on my part caused undue stress on myself and my kids. Other than this one day our schedule is fairly routine. It would have taken me 1 minute to read the paper and put it where it went to prepare myself for the week.

I am a Professional Organizer.

I too have THOSE days.

I didn’t stick to my routine.

I failed my system by not being consistent.

I almost failed my kids.

I could have taken ONE minute on Tuesday to do what I had to do but I skipped it which caused Thursday to get off to a really bad start. How often do you have one of THOSE days? Do you have a system in place and choose to ignore it?

How are you doing at juggling it all?

Oh boy…I really think I needed to see this right now! I use a system too…and I’ve been feeling like I’m scrambling to meet the bare minimums. But now I realize it’s because I’ve neglected my system. Why is it Sunday afternoon before I think about homework and signed permission slips? Because I didn’t follow my Friday afternoon routine. That makes the Lord’s day stressful. Oops.

Okay – thanks (as Julie said) for your transparency. I’m off to get my Friday afternoon routine done so I’m not scrambling at bedtime! :-)

Hey… left a message on FB, but forgot to ask if you have a write-up about your organizing process that’s shown in that picture… with the clipboards and such. It looks so handy and I’d love more insight. :-) THANK YOU!!

Oh we ALL have those days. I think I’m harder on myself because I feel like I’m SUPPOSED to be the organized one, for goodness sakes! I have mantras: Tomorrow is another day. 100 years from now this mistake will not matter.

Good for you for going home for costumes. (…and scrounging for pizza money – been there!) You are such a great mom.

Thanks for the transparency.

Exactly! I know I tend to be hard on myself. The last thing I wanted to do was call and say I was going to be late!
