Now that we had the toy storage for my son’s room all figured out it was time to make some decisions regarding furniture. The playroom had an Ikea armoire, 2 bookshelves and a coffee table that we turned into a train table. I love this set of furniture and after owning them for 5 1/2 years they still have many years of use left in them. I couldn’t think of another place in the house to use them and I wasn’t ready to give them up yet. After looking at furniture prices I couldn’t stand the thought of spending so much money when we really didn’t need to. We could use what we had.

So, instead of buying a dresser we are using the armoire to store clothes rather than toys. I bought two bins to put my son’s shorts and pants in to keep them separated. His underwear and socks are in the drawers below. There is a lot of extra space in there but I think he likes the openness of it because he is keeping everything neat. This might not be the best solution for the future but for now it works for me!
We are still using the bookshelves for all of his books and some bigger cars that would not fit well in the Trofast storage.
Each furniture store we went to we looked at the prices and construction of the beds. Hubby was not impressed with a few and the general consensus from him was “I can build something like that.” And you know if it’s built from real wood it’s going to last a lifetime. We would also be saving somewhere around 50% of the cost by building it ourselves. (Like I actually had anything to do with the building process)
We decided on a platform bed and here is phase one. It is strong enough for Hubby to walk around on and this thing is not going anywhere. Totally solid and I loved the end result. Hubby jotted down some quick ideas for a headboard…
and there she is! I love, love, love the headboard! Unfortunately, about halfway through the headboard project Hubby cut his finger with the router. :( He wrapped it up and continued to work because he is stubborn like that. By Sunday afternoon he decided to go to a walk in clinic and they in turn referred him to the ER because it looked that bad. So after an ER visit our $200 DIY bed turned into a $1000 piece of art. We will never get rid of this baby!
Hubby is fine and his finger healed. He was fortunate that it was not worse. Now for my little public service announcement… never take the guard off of your router or any saw for that matter. All it takes is a split second to get injured.
I know you’re all curious how the room turned out, and what boy theme we picked out, and how the colors came together but you will have to stay tuned for the grand reveal…
I used to hate it when my favorite show would end with to be continued… ha, ha, ha!

Looks great! What a handy hubby you have! Will you be painting the bed?
Our boys have nicer bedroom furniture than we do – isn’t that just sad?
Well, that doesn’t take much, becuase we don’t really have ANY ha! Our bed is just on a frame and we recently went dresser-free in our bedroom (after baby #2 arrived and we needed to bring the desk into our bedroom it was becoming wall-to-wall furniture. I am still amazed that I don’t NEED dressers. With a little creativity, everything that once was in 2 dressers fits just fine into our standard-sliding door syle closet.
I’m on the look-out for a lonely cast off headboard that I can gussy up, or maybe even an old door! ;)
Looking forward to your big reveal!
Oh my! I’m glad he’s o.k. The bed look awesome. And he can honestly say that blood, sweat (but no tears?) went into the making of it!
What a cliff hanger! :) @juliebavi
Yes you are such a tease aren’t you LOL. Headboard looks great, sorry to hear about hubby’s finger though. Ouch!!
