How Does Being A WAHM Work For You?

by Tanna Clark

I just came across this video over at BizzieMommmy’s blog and I had a good laugh so I thought I would share it with you here. I think being a WAHM is a big challenge for a lot of us and I am always working on ways to find a routine that works for us. Take a look at the video and then keep reading…

The part where she takes a phone call in the closet. Been there. Never occurred to me to retreat to the bathtub though. Hmmm. This WAHM business is a tough job but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. As a matter of fact here is what’s going on behind me right this minute….

If I need some quite time I usually put in a movie but today we’re going TV free and since the kids are happiest when they are within 3 feet of me they hauled the toys in here. Nothing better than a 2 year old singing and a 4 year old laughing in the background.

I would love to hear from you… What are your biggest challenges as a WAHM? Also, feel free to share any tips that really work for you, I can use all the help I can get! :)

Really, really glad my clients all know I’m a WAHM, so they don’t always expect calm silence in the background. Of course, I try to do my phone time during nap time, but that doesn’t always work out. The mom in that video sure lied a lot, didn’t she? LOL One more reason I’m glad my business allows for situational transparency!

Not a WAHM, but still have to fit things in after 5:30. Ever locked yourself in the bathroom for some quiet time. I grab a good book, paperwork that needs to get done…sit on the floor and relax. Just turn the vent on and flush every once in a while. They usually stop knocking after the first flush. Works on husbands too.
Not a good plan in one-bathroom-homes.

Lisa, you crack me up! When all else fails I will try that next.

I love watching the video as I can relate into it. So funny. You made me laugh out loud. That exactly is my life as a work at home mom.

I can really relate too! I have a 5-year-old and an 19-month-old, and it’s tough to balance work and home. Anything really important that needs to be done with the least “help” gets done either when the younger one is napping, or after the kids are in bed for the night. My husband is great about helping me when I have something big needing to get done. For the most part though, I work while the youngest naps. The eldest gets to play with Legos when Brother is asleep so thankfully, it’s usually enough of a distraction for him to let me get some things done.

Then you throw homeschooling and an almost-9-months-pregnant mama into the mix and it’s a lot of fun around here!

Great video! I can totally relate to that one. Although I get the most done late at night. Since DH & I both work from home at least we can tag team the boys a little bit during the day.
Only 9 more days until school begins…I am hoping that will help!

Too funny, I can so relate! Thank goodness my almost four year old still naps on occasion or I’d be in big trouble LOL.

Oh, and just to clarify – I’m not currently working outside the home – I’m home full-time with the kiddos doing research about starting a home-based business when I can find the time – I’ll pursue it more when hubby’s done w/grad school.

That’s hysterical! My favorite was when she was wading through the mine field of the hallway! I plan to work from home one day – slowly but surely I’ll get there, but this is a prime reason why I’m waiting till at least dear son #1 is in school all day! ;) Thanks for sharing!

I am still in a part time stage and love watching my business just grow by word of mouth. I don’t think I would be able to do it with all three kids at home. My oldest is in 3rd and my middle child is in preschool 2 days a week. That helps!

95% of the time I work in the office, but that 5 % (when the daycare is closed or my son is sick) is pure chaos! I have always wondered how people make it work for them. I am anxious to see everyone’s comment!

LOL! That’s great!

I think for me the biggest part is having contingency plans for the day — ideas for keeping them busy when the “I’m bored…” comments start popping up, knowing what meals I’m going to make, etc.

Oh Tanna! I haven’t laughed so hard all day! I have actually gone so far as to sit in my parked car, in the garage, in the heat, just to finish up a phone call. You would think with the key hook being right by the door, I would remember to grab them on the way out, but I never do. (Which yes, implies that this scenario has occurred more than once.) I can’t wait to hear from other WAHMoms.

That is too funny! My bedroom closet is through the master bath so I have actually walked in my bedroom closed that door, through the bathroom closed that door and finally in the closet and closed that door! Luckily my two year old is starting to understand that I will let her know when it is someone she can talk to or not ahead of time. Thank goodness for caller ID!
