Our VCR was pretty ancient and when it died we debated on buying a new one. The only movies we had on VHS anymore were kid movies so we knew we wouldn’t need a VCR forever. Instead of buying one my mom decided to give us hers because she didn’t really use it either. Soon after, that one died as well. So now we have killed not one but two VCRs this year. We finally threw in the towel.
My daughter’s first love of TV came in the form of Blue’s Clues videos. Right about the time our second VCR decided to eat Blue she had discovered Noggin and now she is hooked. The videos were no longer needed. The movies have served their purpose for our family. I remember all 3 of my children going through the Blue’s Clues phase.
So, I was left with this shelf of videos. I knew what Hubby’s solution would have been… “Box them up for the next yard sale.” Which is fine but then I thought surely someone could use them before that.
That same week I came across Mary’s post about her VCR that she loves. I also noticed that Mary has an adorable little daughter that is the perfect age for these videos. So I gave her a tweet and asked her if she wanted them and of course she said yes!
I boxed up Blue and all of his Veggie Tale buddies and a few other friends and sent them off to their new home. Saying goodbye to the videos was bittersweet because I was saying goodbye to a “stage” that has passed in our home for the last time. However, seeing them go to a good home most definitely works for me!

That was nice of you! My daughter LOVES Noggin, heck I love it, she is also into Sprout.
Our public library has a VHS/DVD’s available for checkout where you can keep them for up to a week. That would be a perfect place to make a “donation”. That way lots of little kids can enjoy those ol’ time favorites!
very cool idea….and now the stage gets to live on through another little girl.
Great idea! What a nice gesture. I just followed you on twitter.
That was a super sweet thing to do. We have the VCR/DVD combo. And the VCR part never gets used. We donated all of our old VHS movies mostly Disney to the Ronald McDonald House.
Thanks so much, Tanna! My daughter is already loving the Veggie Tales tapes – she’s been watching the same one for a year now! Variety is good! ;)
Isn’t twitter great? I love your solution.
I did the same with some math supplies (Judy clock, fraction tiles, etc)that I found while cleaning yesterday. My kiddos are 24 and 26; I know I don’t need these anymore.
Thanks for sharing your idea.
Our VCR recently died as well, but we broke down and bought a new one. I just couldn’t say goodbye to our kid videos yet. Next time though — I think that will be the end of VCRs for us.
