This is my vanity drawer. It is the biggest pain. It is large and shallow and stuff just goes everywhere! The drawer is 25 inches wide and 16 1/2 inches deep. It is only 1 7/8 inches high. A very shallow drawer!

Because the drawer is so shallow it was hard to find an organizer that would actually fit, and in all honesty I didn’t try that hard to find one because that was not the biggest problem. The biggest problem would have been the organizer sliding around in the drawer and never staying where it is supposed too.

Since I wanted a more custom look, and most wood organizers are larger in size, I decided to take a little trip to the local craft store to see what kind of wood they had. I found strips of balsa wood that was 1/2 inch square and 24 inches long. Perfect for this job!

I brought the wood home and had hubby cut it into strips making an organizer that was 18 1/2″ x 7 1/2″. He evenly disbursed the additional pieces to make dividers and nailed it all together. Now, left like this it would still slide around. I mentioned that we could use velcro to keep it in place but hubby had a better idea.

He took the front of the drawer off and drilled holes to match where the organizer would go. (So you don’t split the wood) Then he nailed each section in to place with finishing nails. He did this on the side and where the 5 ends meet the front of the drawer. Then the front of the drawer went back on and voila’ it was done!

There you have it, a custom built organizer for my drawer. Now everything has a place! I just love saying that. :)

Supplies needed: 3 sticks of balsa wood, drill, 6 finishing nails, hammer.
Cost: $8
Having everything in it’s place: Priceless….  Works for Me!

This is a great idea — I think instead of the balsa I’ll try the foam tape left over from insulating the front door. Thanks for the tip!!

This makes me happy!! You have to love a little inventiveness and a low price tag. Enjoy your “new” drawer :)

Excellent! I have short little drawers too and none of the premade stuff fits in it. This is a great, great idea.

I so understand what you’re saying about doing it yourself. It can be so satisfying. I love the idea but would probably splurge for the $10-20 in little drawer organizers just so I didn’t have to spend the time glueing and cutting. But thin little drawers require special operations. Good job!
