Thanks for joining in again for our laundry theme this week. Yesterday I showed you my laundry room and today I will share a laundry room my husband and I worked on for a client. Yes, I have been putting my husband to work! He has been helping me lately with installs and custom work where needed. He is great to run ideas by and has an “organizer’s mind” as well. He is full of logic and tends to keep me grounded so we are quite the pair. I don’t think I could work with him in his everyday work but we work great together when organizing.
This laundry room was a clean slate except for the wire shelving the contractors had installed. The back of the laundry room was roughly 6 feet wide. When I originally talked to the homeowners they already had a washer and dryer ordered and they knew they wanted a surface area for folding.
The laundry room is as deep as it is wide however the extra space can’t be fully used because that is where you stand to do laundry. So, with that being said the setup I am about to show you would also work well for those of you that have a laundry closet instead of a room.
The homeowners ordered a combination washer and dryer unit. I’m not sure what the capacity of the unit was but by the looks of it, it wasn’t going to hold much. If you have serious amounts of laundry to do I would highly recommend getting a front loading washer and dryer. They are easily stackable, save water and the capacity is amazing! (just my honest opinion here)
With the 3 feet to the right of the washer and dryer we installed a cabinet so that all of the laundry supplies could be out of sight yet easily accessible. Installed underneath are two shelves. The top shelf is just the right size for folding and the lower shelf holds two laundry baskets. Two more baskets could also sit on the floor under the shelf.
To me this is the ideal setup for a small space. The biggest problem most of us have with laundry is putting the clean clothes away, right! While I don’t advocate putting off the inevitable; it does happen! We take the laundry out, start folding, the phone rings or kids start yelling/crying and we get sidetracked. With this layout you can have a laundry basket for each family member, or level of house, or however you want to categorize them. When you fold a shirt slip it into the appropriate basket and it is tucked away nice and neat until you have time to put them away.
The best part is when someone complains about not having any more socks, shirts, whatever, point to the basket and have them put the clothes away while they are there.
I don’t seek perfection I seek simplicity.
