Children Sleeping Through Fire Alarms

by Tanna Clark

We do everything we possibly can to protect our children by chldproofing our homes and installing proper safety equipment like smoke detectors. My friend from church sent me this video and it is chilling.

The thought of these kids or my kids not budging when they hear the smoke detector is scary. When I saw this it reminded me of an instance when my son was about 18 months old. The smoke detectors went off and my son ran to me, hopped up in my lap and fell right asleep. I doubt he was awake for a whole minute. Something about the alarm was soothing enough to make him fall asleep.

In the video they say “After two minutes your chances of escape and survival are critically diminished.” With a traditional smoke detector it took 3 minutes for the kids to start waking up. If your child is alone or something happens to the parents the kids might not stand a chance. Scary.

They then tested a voice smoke alarm that allows you to record a personlized message for your child. Such as, “Sam wake up, there is a fire.” The children tested woke up in seconds! They reacted to their parents voices faster than a regular smoke alarm. Amazing.

I think this calls for a night time fire drill. Would your children wake up?

Better yet, do you have an escape plan in place for your children?

Remember, smoke detectors do save lives, I am simply trying to raise awareness to this issue not asking you to get rid of your smoke detectors. :)

Melissa, that is so sad. I think I will test my kids over spring break as well.

Mandy, the website for the Signal One voice alarm says you can find them at a local home improvement store. So I would check out Home Depot or Lowe’s.

Wow. I never thought of that. Where are these voice recorded fire alarms? They sound like they will be well worth the money. Thanks for posting!

Wow that’s scary. Of my 3 kids, only 1 is a light sleeper. Very concerning. We live in the Toronto area and there were 2 fires last week where the kids did not wake up and escape. I think we need to do a night time fire alarm…. good timing for March Break. Thanks for writing about something so important.
