There is nothing like waking up to a dead computer on January 1st! I tried my best to figure out the problem using HP Support online (on our dinosaur desktop), but I decided to leave it to the professionals before I did more damage than good.
First, I went to the Geek Squad. I called them and they told me to come in and they would run a diagnostic test to see what my options were. They failed to mention it would cost $59. I get there and I was told the hard drive was probably dead. All of the pictures I had on my computer went flashing through my mind. So, I left without running the test.
My husband brilliantly suggested that he bring my computer to the IT guy at his work. Hooray, IT guy! It wasn’t as bad as I thought and he happened to have the disk that would fix it. I won’t go into all the technical details but NOTHING was lost.
When was the last time I backed anything up? Ah well, never I suppose. Little bits here and there internally but I never actually took anything and put it on a CD or external hard drive. It’s been 3 years! My middle child is 3 years old… all of his pictures could have disappeared.
I know it’s important to backup the computer but it is one of those things that slipped through the crack. I’m human after all. The severity never really hit home until I thought about those pictures.
So let’s schedule those backups. Weekly or Monthly. Write it down and get it done. If your computer lost everything right this second what would you be losing?
If you have questions about doing a backup on your computer, leave a comment or email me and I will help you find the best solution.
